We are in disbelief of the predatory anti-trans directives presented by Governor Abbott in Texas. Simply put, Governor Abbott's actions are deplorable.

While the governor has declared gender-affirming treatment for trans youth to be "child abuse" the reality is alarmingly to the contrary: it is his manipulation of power that is abusive, his denial of trans humanity that is abusive, his lack of empathy that is the true source of abuse in this situation. 

In mandating that gender-affirming treatments for youth be investigated by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Abbott has codified discrimination, and has opened the door to avoidable trauma for trans youth and the disruption of families seeking vital care for their child. 

The unfortunate and dangerous reality is that Governor Abbott is not alone in his twisted motivations. The time is now to act in solidarity with and in support of the trans community––in Texas and everywhere else.

We at Stirred Stories are continuing to learn and grow in our allyship. Here's what we know you can do in this moment to combat anti-trans prejudice:

• Speak up! If what's happening in Texas doesn't sit well with you, let others in your community know how you feel. There is power in numbers. 

• Educate yourself. Nervous to speak up because you don't have the vocabulary or expert understanding to do so? That's okay, there are resources to help. Here are a few: 1) Them.us 2) The Trevor Project 3) GLAAD 4) Transgender Education Network of Texas.

• Uplift the trans community by posting about this issue, supporting a trans business, and/or sending a message of solidarity to a trans loved one. 

• Include trans narratives in your day-to-day. The less othering there is, the less likely we are to see situations like the one in Texas unfold. Our book My Mommy is a He! is a great classroom or kitchen table resource for young readers learning about gender identity. 

• Get involved! If you live in Texas, make sure your elected officials know you oppose these recent measures and any similar ones that may arise.
